Highlights - Fourth Quarter 2025
The Lithuanian Research Center (LRC) received 36 separate archival donations during the quarter. A few stand out due to their volume or unique character: the library of Liudas Kairys (donated by his daughters Žiba and Daiva), the archives of Vincas and Kęstutis Žemaitis (donated by Aleksis Žemaitis), and the archives of the Chicago Lithuanian Women‘s Club (organized by Erika Brooks), original archives and artwork from Valentinas Ramonis, and the archives of Izabelė Motekaitienė and Manigirdas Motekaitis (donated by Kazys Motekaitis).
Unique donations include the violin and case of Rytas Babickas (donated by the Daugirdas family), a complete and beautiful set of a young girl‘s national costume, many paintings, especially of Jadvyga Paukštienė (thanks to Deivė Butvila), and several historic maps.
LRC’s collection of Lithuanian piano rolls has been officially recognized as a documentary heritage of national significance and added to the UNESCO “Memory of the World” National Register. The project was submitted by the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania in partnership with LRC, the American Lithuanian Cultural Archive (ALKA), and the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture.
These rolls preserve the earliest examples of professional Lithuanian music — including works by Vincas Kudirka, Juozas Naujalis, and Stasys Šimkus. All known Lithuanian piano rolls were produced in the United States between 1915 and 1932. Researchers have identified around 370 Lithuanian rolls featuring more than 400 musical compositions. LRC safeguards 120 of these rolls — about 30 of them are unique and can be found only in our collection.

A ceremony was held December 6 at the Chicago Lithuanian Center (CLC) to illuminate a stained glass window by the renowned artist Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas. In 2008, the Lithuanian Church of the Mother of God in Maizeville, Pennsylvania was closed, leaving behind several stained glass windows by Jonynas. Vilius Žalpys, head of the Roots project, approached CLC in hopes of saving this artwork. CLC became the owner and, together with LRC, the Čiurlionis Gallery, and Baltic Art Studio, transported the window to Chicago. The Lithuanian Foundation sponsored the project.
