About Us

Archives – our beginning and our mainstay. Personal histories. A people’s history.

The Lithuanian Research Center, Inc. (LRC) in Chicago, USA, is a federally tax-exempt non-profit corporation. The Center is the largest academic institution, scholarly archive, and academic book publisher outside of Lithuania. The LRC is supported by donations and by the Lithuanian Foundation. The Center was established in 1981 and incorporated as a non-profit organization in the state of Illinois in 1982.

The goals and objectives of the LRC are to collect, compile, and foster Lithuanian heritage and archives, to research the housed materials, to publish both academic articles and books, and to organize exhibits through which the public is familiarized with the existing wealth accumulated at the LRC.

The LRC has published more than 50 scholarly books. One of them – William Urban’s book Tannenberg and After – received worldwide recognition; it is listed among the top 30 world history books published in 2001.

Over the past three decades, the LRSC has accumulated collections of both private individuals and organizations, and has been supplemented by new institutions.

The LRSC collaborates with the Mažvydas National Lithuanian Library, the Genocide and Resistance Research Center of Lithuania, the Department of Archives of the Republic of Lithuania, and various universities, museums, and other educational and cultural institutions. The LRSC’s services have often been used by visiting scholars from Lithuania, the US, Japan, Canada, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, England, and other countries. The Center prepares articles about Lithuania and Lithuanians for various encyclopedias, and continually promotes Lithuanian cultural, artistic, and scientific achievements.
